Fostering a Legacy

The realities of child abuse and neglect are ugly and uncomfortable. Every day millions of innocent children face abuse, abandonment, and neglect as a fact of life. At any given time, there are approximately 400,000 kids living in foster care. More than 23,000 kids age out of foster care each year, and the outcomes for those young adults can be startling.

Billions of dollars are spent annually on services meant to support and rehabilitate adults who were once in the foster care system. What if instead of relying on supports later in life, we provided early interventions to PREVENT these negative outcomes?

At Fostering a Legacy we have seen the proof that we can change these statistics. Instead of high school dropouts, we are seeing college graduates. Instead of ending up in juvenile detention centers, we see our participants volunteering with at-risk youth and going into fields of service. It is not a linear path and the road for youth in foster care is unimaginable at times, but our volunteers work to provide loving and trusting relationships that help break the cycles of abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
